What We Do at Royal Victoria Dock East

Caring for an Active Stretch of Water

Royal Victoria Dock East is one of the most active and well-connected stretches of water in the Royal Docks network. From maintaining key pedestrian crossings to managing a licensed fishing area on the water’s edge, our work here touches every part of the dock.

Engineering

Keeping the Connections Open

Royal Victoria Dock East is home to some of the most important crossing infrastructure in the network, including the Connaught Footbridge and the High Level Footbridge. We maintain these structures to the highest standards, ensuring they remain safe, reliable and open for the thousands of people who use them.

Development

Opening Up the Water

The proposed low-level footbridge represents one of the most significant development opportunities at Royal Victoria Dock East, a new connection that will change how people move through and experience this part of the docks. Alongside this, the licensed fishing area provides a quiet, accessible space on the water for the local community.

As the wider Royal Docks regeneration continues to take shape, Royal Victoria Dock East will play an increasingly important role in connecting people, places and the water itself.

Highlights

  • Connaught Footbridge

Connecting Royal Victoria and Royal Albert Docks since 1990, the Connaught Footbridge is a twin-leaf swing bridge that can rotate to allow vessels to pass between the two docks.

  • High Level Footbridge

Built in 2000, the Royal Victoria Dock Footbridge is a lightweight suspension structure connecting Custom House and Silvertown, with an elevated timber deck, twin masts, and lift access at each end.

  • Proposed line of New Low-Level Footbridge

Designed to connect Silvertown with Custom House Elizabeth Line station, the proposed low-level footbridge will provide an accessible pedestrian and cycle crossing of Royal Victoria Dock.

  • Licensed fishing area

Royal Victoria Dock East is home to a designated licensed fishing area, offering a quiet spot on the water in the heart of one of London’s most exciting regeneration areas.

  • ExCeL Quayside

Sitting on the quayside of Royal Victoria Dock East, ExCeL London hosts a packed calendar of major exhibitions, conferences, and events throughout the year.

FAQs

We will keep this section updated, as new information comes available and we will show clearly what information has been added after the website was launched.

What's happening at Royal Victoria Dock East?

As part of the Vision for Royal Victoria Dock West, it was concluded that the West side isn’t the most suitable long-term location for wakeboarding and other higher-intensity water activities. Royal Docks Waterways is working with operators, including Wake Up Docklands, to explore relocating these activities further east within Royal Victoria Dock, where they can be better accommodated.

Who manages Royal Victoria Dock East?

Royal Victoria Dock East falls within the same lease area managed by Royal Docks Waterways (the trading name for the Royal Docks Management Authority), which holds a long lease for the water across the Royal Docks. The freehold is owned by the Greater London Authority, with oversight from the Royal Docks Team, a partnership between the Mayor of London and the Mayor of Newham.

When will operators move to Royal Victoria Dock East?

There’s no confirmed timeline yet. Discussions with Wake Up Docklands (and the Oiler Bar, run by the same business) are ongoing, and any relocation is subject to further planning before it’s finalised. Royal Docks Waterways will continue to communicate with operators and their customers to ensure there’s sufficient notice ahead of any change.
