Lock Gates & Flood Defence

Its three sets of mitre gates create secure water seals and support efficient lock operations for commercial, naval and offshore marine traffic. The outer lock gates provide a dual function as both a public right of way across the top of the gates and a key element of the Environment Agency (EA) flood defence system.

Originally installed as part of the 1989 refurbishment, the EA gates are approaching the end of their intended design life, with future replacement and long-term flood resilience forming an important part of planned infrastructure upgrades.
